(NC) — Gardening signifies different things to different people. To some, it's important to have the most opulent garden in the neighbourhood. To others, spending time in the garden is a way to reduce the stress from the office. To others still, a garden can be transformed into a private, organic farmer's market! Whatever your reason may be for grabbing a shovel and getting your hands dirty, make a few simple additions to your garden this year to aid in your healthy lifestyle.

“There are so many herbs you can plant and, with minimal care, cultivate into delicious, nutritious additions to any meal” says Helen Sherrard, president of the Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA). “The best part is that when you have them around, you have access to the freshest, most natural ingredients.”

Easy to care for and diverse herbs are a good choice to cultivate this spring. Thyme is valued as an antioxidant, can aid digestion and is great in soups and salads. Rosemary can alleviate headaches and has a nice savory flavour. Peppermint leaf makes a soothing, tasty tea that will also aid digestion.

“The convenience of having a variety of fresh herbs growing right in your own backyard can't be matched,” continues Sherrard. “You'll know exactly where these ingredients came from and they can add a fresh, vibrant taste to dishes.”
